Dr. Michele Cavo currently holds the position of Professor of Hematology in the Institute of Hematology and Medical Oncology “Seràgnoli” at S Orsola’s University Hospital’s Bologna University School of Medicine in Bologna, Italy.
Dr. Cavo’s expertise spans the entire treatment journey for both transplant eligible and transplant ineligible myeloma patients. He is an internationally recognized expert on induction regimens pre-transplant and post-transplant maintenance and has been involved in numerous clinical trials with novel reagents.
Dr. Cavo graduated cum laude in both his undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery, and his postgraduate degree in Hematology, from Bologna University School of Medicine. He then took up a residency at Seràgnoli Institute of Hematology, University of Bologna, from 1981 to 1991, and held the position of assistant Professor of Hematology from 1991 to 1998. In 1998 he took up a full Professorship in Hematology at the same department.
Dr. Cavo worked as the Director of Postgraduate Residency of Hematology at Bologna University School of Medicine, from January 2000 to October 2005. He was Head of the Hematology Unit, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria S. Orsola Malpighi, Bologna, from October 1999 to October 2000 and a Member of the Board of the Italian Society of Haematology (SIE) and Treasurer of the Society from 2004 to 2009. He was also co-chairman of GIMEMA Italian Myeloma Network from January 2006 and Chief of the Seràgnoli Institute of Hematology, Bologna University School of Medicine, from November 2012. He is a member of the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) and a member of the MM Hub steering committee.
